Every year when you went to Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, you are sure that it’s the temple of cars elegance.
The event was established as a contest for new Cars in Villa d’Este in 1929. It’s possible to see here some beautiful cars in the world, splitted in several categories.
It is possible to admire old cars, but also Concepts Cars and prototypes.
Every year I am impressed about the organization but first of all about the selection of the cars; 51 cars from 28 car industry and 33 motorcycles and sidecars combinations.
The theme of this year was “Hollywood on the lake” and for this reason in the central padillion there were some cars featuring lot of adventures film as James Bond or Mission Impossible.
It was also a very hugeful ambientation inside Villa Erba with Star Wars and 007 ambient.
The selection of the cars goes from the 1909 to 1985, from a very old Lady “Isotta Fraschini FENC” 1909 to a particular Fiat 500 “spiaggia” 1958, this was a beach car of Gianni Agnelli until 1973.
In some cases the interior of these cars are a pieces of art, and in many cases also the exterior.
As, for example, for the Rolls- Royce Phantom 1929 with a lot of 18 kt gold plating adorns all the exposed metal parts, drove in 1967 by Nelson Rockefeller, governor of the State of New York, later become the US vice-president.
Or for the Packard standard Eight 1932, “Ask the man who owns one”, today remaining one of the most successful advertising slogans of all time.
The car winner of the Coppa d’oro was Alfa Romeo 33/2 stradale, I’m agree with the jury, but also the Porsche Carrera GTS for me it’s another beautiful car, because it was a vehicle for every day use on the public road, but having won the class in 1964 Le Mans 24 hours.
At the end of this post, deserve a citation, two of my cars that are in my heart:
- Lamborghini Miura P400 SV;
- Lancia Stratos Zero.
Both cars were born from the brilliant designer head Marcello Gandini of Bertone, one of the best coachbuilder, in my opinion, in the world.
It hope that the entire collection of Bertone in auction due to the bankruptcy remaining in Italy, it should be better in a Museum, because it is a piece of Italian car history.
